Good Things Come To Those Who Wait - Fighter Verse Reflection Isaiah 64:4

From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear; no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him. Isaiah 64:4

What a joy it is for believers in God through the ages to know that he acts mightily for those who wait for him. Isaiah here is writing with the vantage point of remembering God's great faithfulness to Adam, Abraham, Moses, David, and many more. He is comparing Jehovah with the other 'gods' of surrounding nations and remembering that through all the ages no one has heard or seen a God like theirs who acts for those who wait for him.

In the midst of Assyrian control, Isaiah sees the Assyrian gods as simple idols, works of man's hands that can eat no food and can perform no works. But Isaiah knows that Jehovah is a God who acts mightily. How about us? With our vantage point in history, do we remember that God is faithful to love, to save, to redeem, to control history, to rise from the grave, or to spread his Church with the passion of the Spirit? How about the 'gods' of our day? What are the mighty acts of Vishnu or Shiva, Mohammad or Allah, money, sex, or power? From of old, no one has heard or perceived by the ear; no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him.

Let's wait with trust, and let's remember with rejoicing, our God who acts on our behalf.
